Week 16: A message through space, things I watched and makertime
A week full of topics I cannot talk about...
Hello everyone!
I am sending this message through space. This week I received my Starlink dish and set it up in under 10 minutes. I only need to find a cable solution that now runs through an open window to make this a permanent installation at home. So far, it is working ok. The speed is sometimes only between 50 and 100 MBit/s, but I guess it will get faster over time.
Makertime and business
Ever since I read Paul Graham’s post about the maker’s schedule and the manager’s schedule years ago, I was inspired to be more on a maker’s schedule. In my life, I experience waves of times with more makers and more manager times. I can't switch between maker and manager schedule during one day. And it is sometimes hard for me and my surroundings to manage a blend of these schedules over the course of a week. I am thinking hard about how to organize my time so that I:
have enough offie hours for internal and external topics,
can connect with the people I want/ need to connect with
have enough time to “deep-work” on topics
avoid periods of busyness as this is the most inefficient and energy-draining way to spend my time, I can imagine.
Have weeks that don’t feel like a rollercoaster. I enter on Monday and get out a bit dizzy Friday evening.
Especially the last point is hard to organize in pandemic times as everything flows. With working from home most of the time and spending quite some time in virtual meetings and on the phone, it is super easy to have a filled calendar at all times. My latest tactic to bring more asynchronous conversation into my life by asking people to send a message and have dedicated times for emails, slack, and other channels helps so far.
Secrets…
This week, I spent a lot of my time working on topics and projects I cannot share (yet).
This is what I read and watched this week:
Meal prepping: I love Mexican food. I am not sure this is real Mexican food, but it looks tasty,, and I will try some of the ideas.
Scuba Diving in the Philipines: Finn Snow’s videos are always great to watch. This is a new one where they dive at a public beach in the Philipines. I cannot wait until we can travel again.
AeroPress recipe by James Hoffmann. I have been using an AeroPress when traveling for quite some years. For everyone who wonders how to get the best brewing results: this is a super pragmatic way to use it.
Jeep Liberty Rollover and Rescue in the Backcountry. Matt’s offroad recovery is a very relaxing thing to watch when I want to wind down. It works even better for me than watching camera or lens reviews.
41 Startups Powering the Creator Economy is a good list to start with when figuring out the creator economy. I think there are a lot more models and companies around, and I am starting to look deeper into the field.
European VC soars in Q1 – TechCrunch. Good news for our ecosystem.
I hope you found something interesting in this weeks newsletter and I am looking forward to a week where I will do things I can talk about :-)
Have a great weekend and then a super week everyone!
Cheer, Joerg
